Here's a great link (especially for my Drug Discovery students) to a TED talk by Dr. Russ Altman on how he's using big data (and some social media) to study adverse drug interactions without ever picking up a pipet. Dr. Altman and one of his students leveraged information technology and data science to study drug interactions between an antidepressant (Paxil) and a cholesterol medication (Pravastatin). They used databases at multiple institutions to find that patients on both medications experienced significant increases in blood glucose. It's a fascinating and important topic, and a great example of the power of accessible medical records.
