Notes about the class:
In this class, we will be reviewing some of the skills learned last year, but we will be covering new topics and new skills as well as working on taking your reading and writing skills to the next level. In this class we will be working on reading skills such as decoding strategies to help read words accurately and fluently, vocabulary skills to help understand words, and comprehension skills to help check our understanding while we are reading. We will also be writing different types of sentences and mastering those sentence structures while also learning to write about narratives, informative essays, and argumentative essays. This curriculum has helped students improve their writing skills and that is certainly the goal for the students in this class. In addition, we will be reading class texts such as Among the Hidden, Drums, Girls, and Dangerous Pie, I Am Malala, and reading mythology. Some of these texts are incorporated into the ELA curriculum.
With this curriculum, students will need to bring a few materials to class every day. Students need to have a pencil, pen, highlighter, folder/binder, and writer’s notebook. A writer's notebook will be supplied to them in the beginning of the year. The students don’t need a binder just for this particular class. If they are using binders in other classes, they can just use dividers and use one section for this class. Most of the work will be pushed online through Google Classroom but there are some activities and steps in the writing process that are easier to do with pencil and paper and we will be using a writer’s notebook is provided for each student. It is important they bring their independent reading book to class every day because we will be reading almost every day.
