Reading
Our 5th grade reading curriculum supports students in becoming thoughtful, independent readers. Throughout the year, students engage in a variety of rich texts and deepen their skills across multiple genres:
Unit 1: Interpretation Book Clubs – Students practice close reading and dig into how authors develop themes, characters, and meaning in fiction.
Unit 2: Tackling Complexity in Nonfiction – Students strengthen their reading fluency and word-solving strategies as they explore higher-level nonfiction texts.
Unit 3: Argument and Advocacy – Through reading complex nonfiction, students analyze multiple perspectives and build their skills in evaluating arguments and ideas.
Unit 4: Fantasy Book Clubs – Students dive into fantasy novels, discussing themes, symbolism, and world-building with peers in engaging book clubs.
Each unit builds on students' reading stamina, comprehension, and critical thinking—preparing them to read with insight and independence.
