8th Grade Algebra

Hello 8th graders!

We will begin the year by getting to know each other and by reviewing the math packet from the summer.

For 8th grade, we will complete chapter one and then we will continue to review any additional information

as necessary until standardized testing which begins the week of September 19th. After testing is over, we

will continue on in the text. Your text has three mini-quizzes for each chapter. This means there is an in-text

quiz every 2-3 lessons. Depending on the depth of the material, we may quiz mid-chapter but this will not

be a regular occurrence. You can expect a test at the end of every chapter.

Grading will be on a Weighted Percent System.

Classwork 10% -- There will not be many points in this category but I will use it on occasion.

Homework 20% -- For the most part, homework will be out of four points and completion based.

Quizzes 15% -- After ITBS testing, there will be an average of one quiz a chapter for most chapters.

Tests 55% -- We will have at least one test before ITBS testing, and one per chapter for the remainder of the year.

Weighted Percent System Explanation

If you have the following averages in each category:

Classwork: 100%

Homework: 83%

Quizzes: 92%

Tests: 87%

This is how you would figure out your grade.

Classwork: 10% × 100% = 10%

Homework: 20% × 83% = 16.6%

Quizzes: 15% × 92% = 13.8%

Tests: 55% × 87% = 47.85%

Sum of 4 categories (10+16.6+13.8+47.85)=88.25%

I am looking forward to this year, and I hope you are as well!
