Acronyms

What are all of those acronyms I see associated with Speech-Language Pathologists?

  • IEP = Individualized Education Program

  • ASHA = American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. It is "the national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for .. speech-language pathologists."

  • SLP = Speech-Language Pathologist

  • SLPA = Speech-Language Pathology Assistant

  • M.A. = Master of Arts

  • M.S. = Master of Science

  • CFY = Clinical Fellowship Year

    • The ~9 months after graduating from SLP graduate school. You are considered a speech-language pathologist but in order to be a certified (CCC) SLP, you must be supervised by an ASHA certified SLP. It's similar to a residency period for doctors.

  • CCC = Certificate of Clinical Competence

    • Upon successfully completing your first 9 months as an SLP under supervision from an ASHA-certified SLP, you are considered to be clinically competent. It's similar to a doctor who has completed her residency.
