Mighty Minutes:
Third grade is often a year of great growth and development and I enjoy participating in that with you. Helping each child become a better reader, and love reading are my main goals.
Studies show that the more children read, the better readers they become. In the third grade we (the third grade team) ask that each child spend at least 20 minutes reading at home every day. Please help your child keep track of the time spent reading at home, initial on the calendar that I will be sending home monthly to verify accuracy, and send the form back to school at the end of the month. Students who have met their monthly reading goal at home will get a special treat. Thanks for all your support and encouragement and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!
Book of the Month:
Book of the Month club is an awesome way for students to get out of their reading comfort zones and try reading something new. Each month we will have a different genre that we focus on. We will do a short mini-lesson on the genre and our Librarian will show the kids where to find the genre-specific books in our school library. To be part of the Book of the Month Club your child must read 2 books from the monthly genre, then they must complete a project or book report for each book at home. When they are ready they will bring them to school to present to their class. I have monthly book report pages in the classroom that the students can take home and complete. All BOTMC projects are to be completed at home and are due the last school day of each month. However, they may bring their projects in throughout the month once they are completed. They can keep track of the books read and projects completed on the monthly reading calendar. The students who participate and complete 2 projects each month get to eat lunch with the 3rd grade teachers and participate in a special activity. In addition, there are awards given out at the end of the year for the students who read and do projects on 2 books EVERY month all year. If you have any questions please let me know! Scholastic Book Orders:
We do an (every-other-month) classroom book order, so watch for book orders to come home in their homework folders. You can send back the paper order forms with a check or you can click the link below and place your order online. It's very handy and our class gets points every time you order something through the Scholastic Reading Club! Just be sure to use our classroom code when you place your order!
