I’d also like to take the time to address some more common questions:
Archiving
If you click the “Archive” button on an email it will disappear from the inbox. Once an email is archived it is accessible via searching or by clicking a label on the left if it is labeled.
I’d generally recommend archiving all emails as opposed to deleting them if you’d like to keep your inbox “clean.” We have unlimited storage on Gmail so it’s not entirely necessary to delete emails unless you’re 100% sure you will never need the email again.
Folders
Folders have been replaced with “Labels” in Gmail. They will be listed on the left side of the screen under the inbox as folders would have. An email can contain multiple labels. To label an email, when reading an email there is an icon that looks like a tag at the top of the screen.
Click that dropdown and choose either a current label or “Create new.” Emails can be labeled from the main screen of the inbox as well – put checkmarks next to the ones you want to label, click the tag icon and choose the label.
If you archive an email it will disappear from the inbox and, if labeled, will show up if you click the label from the main screen. Also note that if you have a lot of labels, hover the cursor over the bottom of the list to have the list expand. Click “More” to view additional labels if they extend beyond the usable space.
You can manage your labels via the Settings menu as well. Click the Settings gear and then click on the “Labels” tab at the top.
Searching
Whereas you may have sorted by various fields in Outlook to look for emails, navigating through older emails is going to be driven by searches in Gmail. Results are almost instantaneous and searching is very flexible.
You can click the downarrow on the right side of the search box to help narrow down your search:

Notifications of New Email
If you would like to receive desktop notifications if you receive new email you may do the following:
Click the Settings icon in the upper right and go to Settings.
Scroll down to Desktop Notifications. Click the button next to “New mail notifications on”, then scroll to the bottom of the screen and click on “Save Changes.”
Making Gmail the Default Email Handler
When clicking on email addresses in Chrome, most likely Outlook will open up. You can change this to make it so that mailto: links get opened by Gmail.
To do so, navigate to your Gmail inbox from within Chrome. At the very right of the navigation bar will be an icon that looks like two overlapping diamonds. Click it, and a screen will pop up asking whether you want to allow Gmail.com to open all email links. Click on Use Gmail and click done.
Quick Reference
Also, as a reminder, here is the quick reference guide for some of the common tasks in Gmail/Calendar/Drive:
