What Is Co-op?
  • All students, regardless of their post-secondary destination, have the opportunity to take Co-op
  • Cooperative Education is a planned learning experience, for which credits are earned, that integrates classroom theory and learning experiences at the workplace
  • Up to two Co-op credits can count toward a student's compulsory requirements for their high school graduation


Bored With The Same Old Routine?
 
  • Students can earn high school credits while working in the community
  • Cooperative Education includes a classroom and workplace component
  • Students can participate in a 2 credit (half day) or 4 credit (full day) program
  • Students can participate in Co-op more than once to explore multiple career paths



 Why Take Co-op?
  • Earn credits in a variety of subject areas
  • Explore different career paths
  • Gain valuable work experience - great for the resume!
  • Develop employability, essential and transferable skills and enhance your work habits
  • Earn valuable certifications and training
  • Great addition to your college or university application
  • May lead to an apprenticeship (OYAP - Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program) or paid work


 What Options Are There For Co-op?
  • COMMUNITY & HEALTH CARE - full day - 4 credit - GLN4O4 (complements the Health and Wellness SHSM) - ideal for students who want to work with people (ie. teaching or teacher's aide, policing and law, medical including doctor, nursing, physiotherapy, chiropractor, osteopath, dental including dentist, dental assistant and dental hygienist, social work, veterinary including vet and vet tech, etc) 
  • STRIDES TO SUCCESS - half day - 1 or 2 credit -  GLD2O2 - for students who have an IEP and who require extra support
  • OTHER - let us know what you are thinking .... we may be able to accommodate special requests for unique Co-op opportunities

Next Steps ...
  • SELECT Cooperative Education on your OPTION SHEET or see a Guidance Counselor to make a course change
  • SUBMIT A CO-OP INFORMATION / APPLICATION FORM one of two ways:
1. Complete ON-LINE a CO-OP INFORMATION/ APPLICATION FORM  available here

2. If the above is not available to you, PRINT OUTCO-OP INFORMATION/ APPLICATION FORM  or  go to Guidance or the Co-op Office (185) to obtain a hardcopy that you can complete and hand in
  • ATTEND an interview set-up by your future Co-op teacher to discuss possible placement options and your interests (this will take place in May for future Sem1 students and Dec for future Sem2 students)
  • LISTEN for announcements regarding competitive placements (ie. RVH, Police, Military)
  • VISIT the Co-op office room 185, to find out more
