Welcome to the Quaker Ridge School Library website. We hope that the information below will answer any questions that you may have. Please do not hesitate to contact the librarian, Ms. Byrnes, at kbyrnes@scarsdaleschools.org if you have any other questions.
The library is open during school hours, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Classes are scheduled throughout the morning and afternoon so the library is busy throughout the day. It is suggested that parents email if they need Ms. Byrnes' assistance for research or book selection. Please check with your classroom teacher to find out which day your class meets with Ms. Byrnes in the library for class and circulation.
Ms. Kate Byrnes is the full-time library media specialist. Ms. Byrnes obviously loves to read, but she also loves to travel, bake and paddle board! Ms. Byrnes has taught fourth and fifth grade as well as library media in both an elementary school and a middle school before coming to QRS. This will be her twelfth year in the QRS library.
Mrs. Kathleen Bonanno is the full-time library aide. This is Mrs. Bonanno's third year in the QRS library! She will be greeting all of our students at the circulation desk when they are checking out books!
Students may borrow two to four books at a time (this varies by grade level). Every students should choose at least one "just-right" reading book for them. This is based on personal interest and reading ability, and students are encouraged to use the Five Finger Rule to test the book out before they choose it. The other books selected are "free choice" books, and can be anything from an old favorite picture book to a graphic novel, to a challenging chapter book for their parents to read aloud at home. Students are encouraged to check out a variety of books.
Take a look at our library menu on the side of this page! The "Library Catalog" tab will take you to our online catalog where you can search for books in the library collection. From the library catalog you can view our digital and print collection. Our "Great Reads" page has book recommendations and lots of great ideas for finding book lists online.
Need help with homework and projects? Try our "Databases" page to use our library resources anytime at home! Note: Underneath each database is a link to the QRS password Google doc. This can only be accessed when you are logged into a scarsdaleschools.org google account.
The goal of the Scarsdale librarians is to encourage every student to develop a life-long love of literature and research (information literacy). A collaborative approach between the librarian and the classroom teacher allows for authentic learning of literature and information fluency skills and strategies. Students need to use the skills of inquiry to learn essential content and to construct new meaning. Instruction, design around an inquiry framework, generates active learning and the formation of new understandings.
Books are checked out for one cycle (6 school days) at a time. Each week, it is expected that students return their books unless they need to renew them. Books may be renewed if desired as long as no one else is waiting for a turn with the book. We do not charge late fines, however students will not be allowed to check out a new book until the overdue books are returned. If a book is lost or damaged, please contact Ms. Byrnes to find out how to replace the book.
