In fall 2014 and fall 2015 I taught 01:355:101, "Expository Writing I." This course introduces first-year undergraduates to the essentials of college writing, applicable to any discipline.
From fall 2011 through spring 2013, I taught 01:615:101, "Introduction to the Study of Language." This course introduced students to the scientific study of language, and was an exciting way to tap into common curiosities about language like:
Do animals have language? How do different animals communicate with each other?
What has to happen inside our vocal tract in order to produce understandable speech?
Is the language of "textspeak" rule-governed?
Where in the brain is language processed, and where is our vocabulary stored?
If you are thinking about taking Ling 101 in the future, or are a former student wondering how the course will relate to a potential major or minor in linguistics, you might find this Frequently Asked Questions page on the department website helpful.
