In 2015, suicide rates for Asian and Pacific Islander Americans (APIA) were lower than U.S. national rates for all age and gender categories, except for APIA women aged 20-24 and aged 65 and above. In these age brackets, APIA women died by suicide at slightly higher rates than U.S. national rates for women of a similar age.
Across all age brackets, APIA men/boys died by suicide at higher rates than APIA women/girls in 2015. The disparity between the suicide rates for APIA females and males was most pronounced in the 20-24 years age bracket - 5.92 per 100,000 for APIA women vs. 19.88 per 100,000 for APIA men.
For APIA women, suicide rates were highest in the 45-49 age bracket (6.59 per 100,000) and the 85+ age bracket (6.78 per 100,000) in 2015. For APIA men, suicide rates peaked in the 20-24 age bracket (19.88 per 100,000) and the 85+ age bracket (19.93 per 100,000).
In 2016, the overall suicide rate for APIAs was 6.8 per 100,000, which represents a 17% increase from the overall APIA suicide rate in 2008.
