Gear Gal

Who is the "Gear Gal"?

It is I, Mrs. Maggio!

A bit about myself...

I have been teaching  since 2000 (whoa, really?!).  I started at Webster Elementary School teaching 5/6 combo classes for two years.  Since the 2002-2003 school year, Pershing Middle School has been my home. I have taught 6th grade math, 7th grade pre-algebra, 8th grade algebra, and Geometry.  I have also taught a couple of 6th grade science classes here and there.  For the last 12 years, I have been teaching Engineering. It is an amazing thing to be able to facilitate such a fun and exciting class.  Over the last 12 years, I have watched my students learn, grow, and create things they never thought they could.  I have worked hard to get more girls interested in the Engineering program and I'm proud to boast that over 50% of my advanced class is female! Rock on, girls!!!  I really appreciate the collaboration that I get to participate in with the Engineering Programs at Lewis and Patrick Henry as well.

On a more personal note, I have been married for over 14 years and have two cute kiddos - my daughter is 12 and my son is 9. I am very proud to call myself a full-time working mother/wife/coach.  It is a lot of work, but the rewards are tremendous.  My kids love to come and visit mom's work to see all of the cool stuff that the students do as well as have the students teach them some new skills!

I am a huge sports fan! I'm a former Charger fan, but have since broken up with the NFL...I can't totally give up watching football however, so I now only pay attention to college ball! Go Aztecs! I love to watch the Padres play in beautiful Petco Park, watch the Wave FC games at Snapdragon Stadium, and try to get to a couple Gulls games when the season comes around (can you tell that I am a born and raised San Diego girl?). I grew up playing soccer (15 years) and softball (35 years) and love to hear about how YOU may have played or are playing these sports right now! I do my best to get up to Big Bear often in the summer time to go water-skiing and fishing...I'm not so much a snow-skiing girl - I'll just sit and drink coffee in the lodge. ;-)

I have been in school since I was two years old...and constantly learning.  From learning subject matter, social skills, and sports, to learning from my students, colleagues, and friends. I can't imagine my life without education.  I received my AA from UCSB, my Bachelor's degree in Communicative Disorders with an emphasis in Deaf Education from Mesa Jr. College and SDSU (go Aztecs!), and my Master's degree and Teaching Credential from National University with a specialization in Educational Technology.  I have recently earned my Designated Subjects Credential in Engineering and Architecture as well. I have worked to obtain many certifications over the years as well including GATE/Seminar Certification, Math Specialist Certification, and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Certifications.

As always, if you need anything, you know where to find me!
