STUDENT GOVERNMENT ELECTION INFORMATION
This process is for those interested in being a part of student government: the SHS Student Council and Class Representatives.
General Requirements/Information:
Before you begin this process, please make CERTAIN that your cumulative GPA is 2.8 or above.
STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVE
Each class will have a determined number of Student Council reps plus 4 Class Officers. Applications will be reviewed by the Student Council Advisor(s).
The Selection Committee reserves the right to deny a candidate based on quality of materials, leadership experience, and SHS code of conduct.
As per the Student Council Constitution, any student not selected/elected can appeal the process:
Any eligible candidate who is not selected by the committee and who has served on the council previously or have otherwise demonstrated student leadership skills may appeal.
The petitioner must request in writing reconsideration within one week of the announcement of selection results.
CLASS OFFICERS
As part of the Student Council, class officers applicants must also submit application materials. Class officers participate in activities sponsored by the Student Council in addition to the activities for their graduating class. The exception: class activities, such as those surrounding homecoming, take precedence over StuCo activities.
Class Officers must be elected to their positions during a general election.
When campaigning begins, it can include putting up posters, passing out fliers, making t-shirts, making/wearing buttons, etc. Anything posted in the school must first be approved by Mrs. Dawson. All campaign material must be school-appropriate and should speak to your strengths – not trash other candidates. Anything deemed inappropriate, offensive, or not in the proper spirit of the campaign (by the advisor or an administrator) will result in immediate disqualification from the election. No candidate should spend more than $50 on campaign materials.
STUDENT COUNCIL EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The Student Council Executive Committee must be elected by the Student Council Representatives. Voting will take place at the first general meeting of the new Council.
The EC is comprised of several elected positions: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Class Presidents, and Historian
To be eligible, candidates must have served on the council for at least one year.
Candidates for the EC must complete the application form and meet/interview with the Selection Committee. Before your interview you should have an understanding of the expected duties and responsibilities for the position.
After interviews, the Selection Committee will choose candidates from the pool to run for President. These candidates will then prepare speeches to be presented during the general membership meeting. At that time, the membership will vote. The candidate with the most votes will serve as the president.
Candidates for Secretary, Treasurer and Historian will also prepare speeches for the full-chapter meeting. The candidate with the most votes for each of these positions will be elected to serve.
