Introduction to Guitar is for students in grades 9-12 who have never played guitar. Students will learn basic hand and finger positions, primary chords, simple strumming patterns and single note melodies. Reading and writing musical notation and guitar tablature are also components of this course. Singing while playing, as well as basic care and maintenance of the instrument will be included in the curriculum. Only acoustic and classical guitars are used in this course. A school instrument will be provided, but students may bring an instrument from home.
Guitar I is for students in grades 9-12 who have successfully completed the Introduction to Guitar course and want to continue learning guitar performance and music reading. Key concepts of Guitar I will include chord strumming, finger styles, note reading, solo literature, guitar ensembles, fundamentals of technique (hand and finger positions), fundamentals of beginning music theory as it relates to guitar, basic ear training (including tuning and identification of chords), and instrument care and maintenance. Guitar I students are given more independent practice time, group projects, and take greater ownership of their own musical development.
Students may use a personal guitar in class, but it must be an acoustic guitar or a classical guitar. NO electric guitars are allowed. All student owned instruments must be in a case and must have a name tag. If a student uses a school instrument, he/she will be responsible of damage or loss of the instrument. Full replacement value is $100.00. Students who use school instruments must purchase replacements strings if they break a string due opt negligence. These will be available at school for $1.00.
