Salem City Schools Receives Grant

In 2011 seventy-six grants were awarded from more than 600 applications received from across the Nation. Salem City Schools was only one of two school divisions in the Commonwealth of Virginia to receive Carol M. White PEP grant. Grant recipients must implement programs that help students make progress toward meeting state physical education and health standards. Over the next three years Salem will receive $801,091 to improve the division’s physical education program. Grant funds have be used to purchase a new health and physical education curriculum and to provide the training and equipment necessary to ensure it’s successful implementation.

This grant has provided the funding necessary to greatly improve the physical education program in each school. For example, the division has received over $50,000 toward the purchase of new PE equipment and the high school has received an additional $75,000 to purchase equipment for a fitness center. The grant also supported a community garden project at West Salem Elementary. These are just a few of the many changes that have started to occur in physical education classes in Salem City Schools.
