Fitness Scores

All Salem City Schools will complete the following fitness measurements:

  • 20 or 15 Meter Pacer– This measurement assesses cardiorespiratory endurance.

  • Curl-Up Cadence – This measurement determines the muscular endurance and strength in the abdominals and hips.

  • 90 Degree Push-Ups (Cadance) – This is a measurement of upper body muscular strength and endurance.

  • Back Saver Sit & Reach – This is a measurement that determines the flexibility of the hamstrings and lower back.

  • Trunk Lift- This measurement determines trunk strength, flexibility and endurance.

  • Body Mass Index (BMI) – BMI is a screening tool used to identify growth patterns in populations. It is derived from height, weight, age and gender. It is also a tool that can be used by parents to help them understand the growth patterns of their children over time.

Protocols and standards for the above fitness measurements are derived from the Cooper Institute (Healthy Fitness Zone Standards) and are recommended by the Virginia Department of Education.
