The video shows three parts of student learning: Explicit instruction with modeling; independent practice with teacher facilitation, and whole group instruction to wrap up student learning at the end.

Steve Bearden presents a vocabulary development lesson to first grade students. Utilizing the Rule of 3 Strategy, students 1) Rehearse the word, 2) Analyze the word, and 3) Produce the word. By working with the words prior to reading a new story, students' comprehension is elevated. This strategy works well with ELL students, as well as, beginning readers. Words with multiple meanings, such as 'light,' 'tune,' and 'skip' are debunked and framed within the text in order to maximize comprehension.
