What is a VISUAL SUPPORT?
Visual supports are any tool presented visually that supports an individual as he or she moves through the day. Visual supports might include, but are not limited to, pictures, written words, objects within the environment, arrangement of the environment or visual boundaries, schedules, maps, labels, organization systems, time lines, and scripts. (National Research Council, 2001) Visual supports are evidence-based practices to support individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
Why should I use a VISUAL SCHEDULE with Students?
Visual Supports are helpful for students who demonstrate a relative strength in and preference for processing visual information. They work well to promote understanding and use of language. Visual supports can assist individuals in understanding social expectations and developing social skills. Visuals can highlight relevant details and reduce anxiety by making the world more predictable.
