When you suspect that the child requires an accommodation via technology to access the general curriculum and make meaningful progress, click below:
The Assistive Technology Support Staff and the referring individual discuss a time to consult that is conducive to all of the required IEP team members that need to be involved for that student, including the student.
The case manager must complete the Electronic Assistive Technology Consult Request Form that can be found on the and the Employee Portal. The Assistive Technology Support Staff is notified when a referral is submitted.
The Assistive Technology Support Staff follows up with a visit to consult with all involved. The WATI Assistive Technology Assessment Guide is used to determine what the student is currently using and what the student may benefit from so that the levels of support and opportunities for independence are appropriate.
○ The following resources from WATI (Wisconsin Assistive Technology Initiative) should be used to guide the discussion to meet the needs of the student.
Notes Regarding Step 4:
If specific software, Google extensions, or equipment are required for a student to access general curriculum, an additional meeting with a Special Education Technology Support Staff will be arranged. In the case of a student who may need an electronic communication device, the Assistive Technology Program Support Staff may invite a consultant from a communication device company to assist with the assessment. A 2-4 week trial may be needed to determine if the equipment is appropriate for a student; it sometimes takes longer to make this determination.
The Assistive Technology Support Staff will summarize the findings in a Google Doc and share it with the applicable staff.
The information will then be entered into the IEP in the following areas: Present Level, Special Factors and Supplementary Aids and Services. See pages 175-182 in the IEP Team Handbook.
