Week of 11/4:
Fluency: mental addition and subtraction strategies, multiplication and division facts
Review: place value to the thousands place
Lesson: attributes of 4-sided shapes, including rectangles, rhombuses, squares, and trapezoids
Ask your child what the rules are for rectangles and rhombuses. What makes a square so special? Encourage your child to use math language to discuss their understandings.
Ask your child to find examples of these four sided shapes in the "real world". It is also a good skill to find non-examples and to explain why a specific four sided shape is NOT a rectangle, square, or rhombus.
Week of 10/28:
Fluency: mental addition and subtraction strategies
Review: multiplication and division strategies (working with two-digit multiples and two-digit factors)
Lesson: finding equivalent fractions, comparing fractions with like numerators or denominators, writing fractions that are greater than 1 whole as a mixed number
We will take our Fraction Unit Test this week.
Looking ahead: 2-D Geometry
Week of 10/7:
Fluency: mental addition and subtraction strategies
Review: three-digit addition and subtraction problem solving strategies
Lesson: discussing unit fractions, and how the size of fractional parts are relative to the size of the whole; we are writing fractions using numbers and symbols; we are relating using fractions to division
Week of 9/30:
Fluency: 4's and 8's multiplication facts, 5's and 10's multiplication facts; mental addition stragegies
Review: three-digit addition and subtraction problem solving strategies
Lesson: Unit Test on Multiplication and Division; Relating equal groups to fractions, writing fractions using symbols
Week of 9/23:
Fluency: 4's and 8's multiplication facts, 5's and 10's multiplication facts
Review: three-digit addition and subtraction problem solving strategies
Lesson: strategies for dividing with 5, 10, 2, 4, and 8; division problem solving
It would be very beneficial if students were practicing their multiplication/division facts in some way outside of school, especially their 5s, 10s, 2s, 4s and 8s.
Week of 9/16:
Fluency: 4's and 8's multiplication facts
Review: two-digit addition and subtraction problem solving strategies
Lesson: meaning of division; how division and multiplication are related; using the multiplication facts we have learned to help us with division situations
Week of 9/9:
Fluency: 5's multiplication facts
Review: two-digit addition and subtraction problem solving strategies
Lesson: multiplication strategies for 5's, 2's, 4's, and 8's facts; mathematical language we use to discuss multiplication; different ways to show multiplication (tables, pictures, number lines, arrays)
Week of 8/26/19 -
Fluency: Addition Strategies - We know our addition facts up to ten, and can manipulate these facts to solve problems mentally.
Review: Fractions - We know that fractions are part of a whole, and that the more equal parts are in the whole, the smaller the parts will be. We are able to compare fractions using length models.
Lesson: Multiplication - We know that multiplication is repeated addition, and we notice the patterns created when we count by a number to find its multiples.
