Wood Duck Houses on the Mississippi Backwaters

The stormy weather just missed Winona, so we were able to take the canoes out on the Mississippi River to check on the Wood Duck Houses Riverway students built and set out. For many students, canoeing was a new experience. We all braved the windy weather and hot sun as we paddled from house to house, checking for signs that they had been used. We checked about 8 houses, and found signs (feathers and eggs) of Wood Ducks, Owls and Swallows. It was very exciting to see that birds had used them, especially since Riverway students, including many summer schoolers, were involved in the Wood Duck project from construction on. It was a fun day!
