Riverway Learning Community services students with special needs in a fully inclusive environment. This means that, instead of students going to a "resource room" where a SPED teacher is waiting to give them a lesson, our SPED teachers go to the student, in the classroom or commons, to support their needs. Because of this least restrictive environment, students with academic needs are never singled out as being different than their peers. Students with behavioral needs however, may not be best served within this model and often experience more success elsewhere, in programs designed to separate special needs students from the general population. This allows for more intensive intervention without disrupting the learning needs of others. Riverway is committed to creating the conditions for all SPED students to succeed, working closely with families to determine the best plan of action for each student.
