Geology of Arizona Project
Arizona Geology Research Fall 2012
Arizona is a geologic wonderland – there are hundreds of geologic features that we can see and explore. In this project you will choose one feature or region and research it.
if you visit the place you you are researching you can get 25pts extra credit!
Here is a list of topics you can cover but if you have a favorite feature or area not on the list you can submit it to me for approval.

Sedona / Oak Creek Canyon Kartchner Caverns Tonto Natural Bridge Chiricahua Mountains
Montezuma’s Well Superstition Mountains San Francisco Peaks Sunset Crater

The paper will be at least 2 to 3 pages double spaced 12pt font. (not including images and works cited)
It will be in essay format, meaning there will be a clear introduction - body and conclusion.
It will be graded using the six point writing rubric.
In your paper you will focus the following :
- The types of rocks in the area. (sedimentary –metamorphic - igneous - intrusive or extrusive- basalt - granite etc...)
- The geologic history – the sequence in which the rock units formed and how they formed. The geologic times ( for instance -- Cenozoic Mesozoic Paleozoic Precambrian).
- How is the topography (shape) of the land related to the geology (rocks and Earth forces) in the area or feature. How is the shape of the land related to the geologic processes. (erosion, weathering, igneous activity ect.
Your paper must include
· Cover page – title - your name and date – my name - class/ period and 1 image
· 3 or more sources that are cited in MLA format with in text citations a works cited page.
· 3 or more images with explanatory captions.
you will turn in a printed copy and submit a copy to www.turnitin.com
Your paper will not be accepted if citations are not used. When you use other people’s words/ideas you must say where you got them. If you do not it is called plagiarism, which is subject to consequences. (see student hand book and class syllabus for more on this) You have your own voice use it and write your own paper.
