Kindergarten
Your child can't tie her shoes, but her classmate Julia can.
Julia's mother worries, because Julia doesn't know the alphabet.
Keith knows the alphabet, but doesn't know his colors.
It's time to stop worrying about what your child can't do.
Instead, focus on what she CAN do.
Find her special talents and let her know you think she's great!
Like plants, children grow at DIFFERENT rates.
Some bloom early and some bloom late.
Just remember this:
There are NO weeds in Kindergarten.

Zero the Hero!
He visits every day there is a zero in the ones place (10th, 20th, 30th... day of school) and brings a special treat shaped like a zero! We LOVE Zero the Hero!!
Popcorn words are the sight words that we learn in Kindergarten. These are words that we should know how to read and write. We usually introduce 2-3 words a week. We will practice these words in class. You can help your child at home by practicing these words too.
Here are the 60 words we will work on from our Really Great Reading program:
the, in, my, a, I, am, is, for, here, at, go, and, like, to, it, be, not, can, you, are, do, did, too, will, all, me, with, was, no, so, say, now, have, said, come, down, they, that, this, ate, our, who, where, what, must, we, he, she, want, but, there, saw, own, please, make, good, new, out, one, two
How can I practice at home?
1. Write these words on post-it notes and put them all over your house.
2. Go on a "word hunt" and find theses words in the books you and your child read together.
3. Make flash cards and practice nightly with your child.
4. Check out these slides to practice! Sight Word Slides Link
Secret Stories!
(These help unlock sight words so children don't need to memorize words but READ them!)
What are Secret Stories? Here is a parent website for you to check out and learn more about this "backdoor" technique for learning using curiosity and an emotional connection to a story for remembering sounds letters make when they are not by themselves....because letters are never by themselves in words! No need to buy anything (products we use in class will be featured) this website will provide you with short videos and information so you know how to reinforce what we are learning in class!

Word Families
Word Families are vowel consonant combinations at the end of words. These "Word Families" occur frequently in our text. Children who learn to recognize word families read more fluently.
