Last term I got a maths rotation going fairly successfully apart from the usual encroachments on maths time due to many unavoidable factors. I attempted to incorporate students recording their learning strategies on the ipads and flips but as usual didn't scaffold this well enough, instead expecting that the kids would be able to do it independently with little support. I also attempted to incorporate more involved problem solving activities using the ideas/approach Dan Meyer uses. (3 Act Problems)
The few of these that I tried were definitely engaging for most of the students but the difficulty with our maths time getting squashed made this difficult.
So what's the plan for this term?
I really want to have the students regularly recording and sharing their strategies but will this time scaffold the process much better. We now have lots of examples other children have been doing on vimeo which will help but along with this I need to spend some time with the class discussing how to be self-managing to come up with a set of guidelines to help them work through their independent tasks better.
I am setting aside half a day for maths problem-solving sessions. These will mostly be mixed ability groups and will give the children a chance to explore a range of maths problems using a variety of strands and strategies.
