I have got a more consistent process of checking off the daily must do's (Xtramath/Mathwhizz) so am feeling this leaves more time to include more open ended problem solving activites.
The focus has been on area and perimeter this term. A task that I had set for them was designing a house and calculating the area and perimeter of all the rooms. Some of the children had already known that I was interesting in them teaching me about Minecraft with the possibility of including it into our learning programme at some time. As soon as I introduced the task some of them asked if they could do it in Minecraft. As it was such a perfect example of a way Minecraft could be incorporated into their learning I decided to just go with it and let them use it despite having really set up clear guidelines or without me being totally familiar with it. I found that the engagement was instantly high. Some didn't quite get the understandings of what they had to do, but being able to show them in Minecraft and explain what the concept of the area and perimater was meant that they got a better understanding.
As a consequence we have spent far more time on this this term and so I have still not really got the process of children recording their maths understandings of different strategies and problem solving some way whether digitally or otherwise..
