Copyright, Fair Use, Creative Commons and Music

This term you will be learning more about Copyright law and issues, Fair Use and Creative Commons. You will also be looking at the relevance of these topics to the music industry.

Learning intentions:

• 1. Identify common collective and individual beliefs about copyright law and fair use. (i.e. What do you know about copyright and fair use?)

  2. Differentiate between legitimate creative uses and infringement of copyrighted material. (i.e. What is the difference between legal and illegal use?)

  3. Accurately define the permissions granted by copyright law. (i.e. When are you allowed to use copyrighted material?)

How will you do this?

• • Reflect on what you already know about copyright law.

  • Learn about and see the connection between the history of innovation and the history of copyright law.

  • Learn about fair use, free speech, and the public domain and how those concepts relate to using materials created by others.

  • Consider and reflect on the perspectives of various stakeholders e.g. consumer, artist, music company, online sites (e.g. Google, Youtube etc).
