2024 One Book One School Coming Soon!

Olivet Elementary School Celebrates The 2023 One Book, One School

By:  Ms. Gwen Acosta, K-4 Media Specialist, Pittsgrove Township Schools

Something BIG is coming to Olivet Elementary School…this year’s One Book, One School, The Giant of Geography written by Tevin Hansen. One Book, One School is a nationwide reading program which encourages the school to become a community of readers with the entire school community (students, staff, & families) reading the same book together as ONE BOOK, ONE SCHOOL. This program One Book, One School promotes a love of reading and motivates a community of readers to increase vital reading skills.

This is the 8th year that Olivet School has participated in this annual reading event.  Each year, Olivet Elementary School’s One Book, One School Committee selects a book to read as a school community with each student receiving a copy to read at home together as family. The book launch assembly takes place every April in honor of National Library Month. This kick-off helps to create excitement for reading and is a fun way to promote literacy both in and out of school. During the book launch, the magic of reading comes to life with a special pep rally style assembly where the book title is revealed and the characters literally jump out of the pages of the book right into our school with a Character Meet and Greet. It is here where members of the One Book, One School Committee dress up as the story characters to help motivate and to help peak students’ interest in reading the book.

Each week, the students have the opportunity to take part in classroom discussions as well as to answer trivia questions where they can earn punches on their special One Book, One School bookmark, which can be cashed in for prizes and other special incentives. There are also culminating projects and special family night events that coincide with the book. This year Olivet Elementary School will be hosting a Geography Bingo Family Night as well as a Geography Themed Movie Night. Olivet Elementary School will also be hosting a school-wide Geography Bee.
