Ethernet I/P is a an industrial CIP protocol used for HMI, PLC to PLC, and Distributed IO systems. PFI will allow Ethernet I/P for Remote IO and Devices only when implemented under strict adherence to the standard.
1. All Remote communications that rely on the ethernet to run a process will be under these standards. for example a HMI does not need to be on to run a process, the loss of an HMI will not cause the process to stop. But if a Flex IO panel or Power Flex 70 is on Ethernet and the Ethernet goes down it will cause the process to Fault. Because of this, the Standard was created to insure a reliable system.
2. All Ethernet Runs leaving the Main Enclosure will be Red Cat5e PVC Shielded Cable. This is to identify a cat5 as being a process only cable and no one is to remove a cable during operation.
3. The Switch responsible or interconnected with the I/O in the system must reside in a dedicated Enclosure or PLC Panel. this to insure MIS operations will not unplug or power down a ethernet switch accidentally.
4. The Switch Should be a AB Stratix 8000 or 5700 with Cisco IOS. An alternative will be a Catalyst 2960S or equivalent. if switch must be mounted in a PLC enclosure then a Stratix or 2960C must be used.
5. When Contrologix or Compactlogix is used, 2 Ethernet Modules will be used. one for HMI / Online use, and the 2nd for Process Control. . Both will plug into the Process Switch or Stratix Switch. If the process is Large multiple cards can be used for either HMI or Process control.
6. All Systems will use Static IPs. I/O connections use Multicast and therefore must be oon the same Subnet or Vlan. Explicit Messages are unicast and may be routed across Vlans.
7. The Stratix or Process Switch will use 2 uplink ports and be configured as a L2 Etherchannel Trunk port on both Ends. This is ti ensure High Availability. REP is an option, but should be avoided.
8. Security on the switch will be setup for console and telnet. Only Authorized personnel will have access to configuration rights. The same recovery password will be placed on all Process Switches. But a Tacas+ or Radius Server should be used to Authenticate user access.
