Scholarships

Scholarships. Where to start?!

Much of "growing up" is accompanied by appropriate time management and incorporates an understanding of what choices/outcomes provide you with the biggest "bang for your buck" (see what we did there?!).

With respect to scholarships, understanding not only the criteria but also who you may or may not be competing against for money is important. For example, competing against 50 other students may have better odds than competing against 1,000 students.

Below are our general recommendations, in order of priority, for where your time may be best utilized with respect to applying/qualifying for money to help cover the cost of college:

1. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

     • Before each year of college, apply for federal grants, work-study, and loans with the FAFSA form. Your college uses your FAFSA data to determine your federal aid eligibility. Many states and colleges use FAFSA data to award their own aid. 

     • Utilize any grant money awarded, first.

2. University-Based Scholarships 

   • • Most Universities have university-based merit, need-based, and/or endowed scholarships.

       1. •  Many may require you to fill out the FAFSA and/or complete a Separate application.  

     • Be sure to check out college financial aid sites and scholarship pages!!

3. Local and/or criteria-specific scholarships (ex. For Pender County residents, religious affiliation, civic organization members, etc.)

• Online applications include a link within the scholarship listing.

• For scholarships that do not have an online application, please click on the THS Scholarship Application file at the bottom of this page to print out an application.  It is a word document. Each application will note how it should be submitted; either to the organization or to the Student Services Department. All scholarships being turned in to Student Services should be given to Mr. Buchanan.

4. National, large search engine, and/or broad-ranging scholarships (ex. Coca-Cola Scholarship)

5. FAFSA continued...

   • • Once/if all other sources of financial aid have been utilized, then Student Loans.

     • Subsidized Student Loans - Do not accrue interest while a student is in college at least half-time. 

     • Unsubsidized Student Loans - Unlike a subsidized loan, you are responsible for the interest from the time the unsubsidized loan is disbursed until it’s paid in full.
