The brochure of the AP Academy identifies the student as a responsible learner who uses his or her talents and skills to contribute to the community. We believe that service is an important component to a student’s total educational experience. To that end, our students will complete a total of 100 hours of community service during their four years at PHS.
We also believe that performing service hours is not forced volunteerism! Rather, volunteering in the community provides our students with many opportunities and rewards, including the following:
- Strengthening academic and social skills.
- Making academic content relevant and practical.
- Meeting people not normally in a social circle.
- Getting their voice heard in what matters in Pender.
- Investigating potential careers.
- Gaining a sense of accomplishment.
- Doing something good- both for the community and the student as well!
Rules and procedures for garnering service hours:
- All Pender High AP Academy students are required to do a minimum of 100 hours during their high school years. (Of course, we highly recommend that our students perform more.)
- All service hours must be documented by the student on the Service Log, available online. These sheets must be returned to the service coordinator. Students should keep a copy for their records.
- Student hours performed for fundraising events for non-profit charities will count as volunteer hours.
- Students may not receive any pay or in-kind benefits from the volunteer service.
- Service for a student’s family or family business will not count for service hours.
- Service performed as a result of a disciplinary action taken by the school or courts will not count.
- Service hours will not be awarded for any in-kind or monetary donations, like donating to a canned food drive, for instance. However, time spent organizing and conducting a drive will count.
If there is any question about the validity of service choices, please ask prior to performing the activity.
