Welcome to the School of Art + Design

We think nothing is as exciting and rewarding as the exploration of our world using the materials and methods of the disciplines represented in the School of A+D and are delighted that you’ve chosen to join us as part of the faculty.

Offering a broad curriculum that includes degrees in Art History, Art Practice, and Graphic Design, we are dedicated to helping student artists, designers and art historians explore new avenues of expression, prepare for professional and academic careers and build theoretical and practical foundations for future artistic and intellectual discovery. We are grateful for the contribution of your particular expertise and perspective, and thank you for helping us extend the teaching and learning capacity of this community.

As you think about the course you’ll be teaching and explore the resources on this site, please keep the following in mind:

  • Your course should be built around concrete learning objectives. When designing content and structure, please consider these questions: Why does the course exist? How does it fit into the program as a whole? What other courses does it relate to? What do students need to take away from the course? What elements of inquiry and mastery do students need to be able to demonstrate?

  • Construct a way to relate your course learning objectives to student activities and assessment. How will you know when students have attained the learning objectives you've established? How will you distinguish between excellent, good and substandard work?

  • How will your assignments help you meet your assessment goals? How will you communicate to students their progress over the term? Delivery of timely feedback on whether students are meeting instructor expectations is the item most commonly noted in student evaluations. Create a structure for assessment, roll it out in the form of assignments, and make sure you let students know, early and often, how they’re doing.

  • Share your thinking about learning objectives, assessment, assignments, and calendar in the form of a syllabus. Make it public, share it with your students, and please share it with us. We expect to receive syllabi from all instructors in our School. Please send us a PDF as soon as it’s ready.

Finally, if you have any questions, please ask. We are glad to be of assistance in whatever way we can: Directly, through referral to other full-time and adjunct faculty or to other teaching and learning resources here on campus.
