Interests

As a biogeochemist and an ecosystem ecologist, I am broadly interested in 1) understanding ecosystem responses to environmental changes and 2) applying ecological knowledge to help inform environmental decisions, particularly with regard to restoration, sustainability, and managed ecosystems.

In my research, I focus on the movement of nutrients (mainly nitrogen and phosphorus) and the production of greenhouse gases, in natural and human-modified ecosystems, including wetlands, streams, forests, agricultural, and urban ecosystems. I use approaches from ecosystem ecology and biogeochemistry in my work.

At Portland State University, I teach, conduct research, and advise undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Environmental Science and Management. I am also an associated faculty member with PSU's Center for Aerosol and Climate Research.
