U.S. History Survey, 1 credit, 1 full year: Students in U.S. History Survey pursue in-depth study of historical thinking skills and U.S. history to equip them with the knowledge and skills required for success in postsecondary education (i.e., freshman level courses), the skilled workplace and civic life. The amount of content in the standards for U.S. History Survey corresponds to the course credit graduation requirements identified in Minn. Stat. ยง 120B.024. (Minnesota Department of Education, Saint Paul Public Schools).
SPPS high school U.S. History Survey has ownership of a research writing product that fulfills Common Core State Standards for History and MN State Standards for Social Studies Historical Thinking Skills. Students can expect to participate in History Day to fulfill the research writing product.
This year, we will also be integrating our High School Expedition: Survival into our American Studies curriculum. Our survival case studies will focus first on Reconstruction, especially how African Americans were able to survive through the Jim Crow Laws, then the Civil Rights movement of the 1950's & 1960's, focusing on the strategies African Americans used in their attempt to gain equal rights.
Learning Targets so far:
Quarter 1
LT 1: I can explain what drew settlers west and the impact settlers had on the land and Native Americans.
Quarter 2
LT 2: I can provide the causes of the American Revolution and explain whether or not the American Revolution was justified.
LT 3: I can explain the rights that are outlined in the U.S. Constitution for its citizens and its system of checks and balances when creating laws.
LT 4A: I can choose a meaningful History Day project topic that interests me and fits within the theme Rights & Responsibilities
LT 4B: I can find and use a variety of resources that will support my project.
Quarter 3
LT 5: I can create a thesis statement that connects my topic to the theme and argues the impact of my topic in history.
LT 6: I can write and present historical content through a History Day project.
LT 7: I can describe the causes of the Civil War
ST: I can describe the differences between the North & South in the mid-1800's
ST: I can describe the compromises made by the states to put off the Civil War
ST: I can explain what events directly lead to the start of the Civil War
