As stated in the Academic Model section of the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct, PA Virtual's mission is to provide a system and structure that enables students to reach their full academic and social potential. This system is built on active student participation, consistent attendance, and strong parent (Learning Coach) engagement. School attendance—and class attendance for students participating in synchronous instruction—is the foundation of student success and active engagement. As outlined in the Parent (Learning Coach) Rights and Responsibilities section of the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct, parents and Learning Coaches are responsible for ensuring that students log into school, attend classes regularly, arrive on time, actively participate, and remain engaged throughout the instructional day in accordance with Pennsylvania law and the attendance policies established by the PA Virtual Board of Trustees. Students who do not comply with the school's attendance policies may be subject to the attendance intervention process and corrective actions outlined below.
PA Virtual is committed to partnering with students and families to promote regular attendance and academic success. When attendance concerns arise, the school uses a tiered intervention process designed to identify barriers early, provide support, and improve attendance. Students are expected to demonstrate improved attendance and active participation throughout the intervention process. The intensity of interventions may increase if attendance concerns continue.
PA Virtual is committed to working collaboratively with students and families to promote regular attendance and remove barriers to success. Depending on the student's attendance history and individual needs, interventions may include, but are not limited to:
Attendance notifications sent to the parent or Learning Coach.
Communication and conferences with the student, parent/Learning Coach, teacher, and/or Family Support Coordinator (FSC).
Development and implementation of a Student Attendance Improvement Plan (SAIP).
Individualized attendance goals and ongoing progress monitoring.
Attendance coaching sessions to provide additional guidance, resources, and strategies for improving attendance.
Referrals to school-based supports, including school counselors or the Student Assistance Program (SAP).
Parent (Learning Coach) mentoring and attendance support resources.
Home visit offers, when appropriate, to strengthen school-family partnerships and address attendance barriers.
Referrals to community agencies or Children and Youth Services (CYS), when appropriate.
Administrative review and additional interventions as permitted by PA Virtual policy and Pennsylvania law for students who do not demonstrate attendance improvement. Depending on the circumstances and applicable law, additional interventions or legal action may be considered.
