6th to 7th Grade Math Placement Process & Timeline
Beginning of May
All 6th-grade students will take two PAUSD math placement tests, one focusing on procedures and computation, the other focusing on reasoning and problem-solving. Each test is multiple-choice, is taken without a calculator, and will take approximately one class period. These are not tests that students should have to study for as they are based on the curriculum learned in class this year. Test results will not be available to parents or students until placement input letters go home in mid-May.
Mid-May
6th-grade teachers will work to complete input forms to help you decide 7th-grade math placement for your student. Completed 7th-grade math registration forms will be mailed home about two weeks after students sit for the placement test. The input forms will provide information that will be helpful to you in deciding the best placement for your student in 7th grade. You can see a sample of this input form attached to this letter.
Mid- to End of May
Please return your student’s input form to his/her classroom teacher and indicate your choice for 7th-grade placement. If you have questions about the input forms, please contact your student’s classroom teacher. Teachers will be happy to discuss the best placement for your student after you receive your input form.
Skipping 7th Grade Math:
If a student earns marks for Math 7A in every area of the input form, it means they have done a tremendous job in 6th-grade math! It does not necessarily indicate that they are prepared to skip a grade of math. However, students who receive X’s in all columns for Math 7A will have an opportunity be screened for readiness to take the Math 7A Mastery test. Students who do well on the screener will sit for the Math 7A test. Students who show mastery of the Math 7A content go directly to Algebra 8. While this option is not appropriate for most students, it is an option for students who feel they are more than a year ahead in the math curriculum. Most students who are eligible for the test, do not show mastery at an 85%, which is the minimum requirement to skip to Algebra 8. Students who qualify and who are interested in taking this test should contact their classroom math teacher. The Math 7A Mastery Test will be administered during the school day at the end of the school year to outgoing 6th-grade students. Students new to Jordan will be assessed in the fall.
