The Paulist Fathers began in 1858 in New York City. Servant of God, Fr. Isaac Hecker, son of German immigrants, grew up on the lower East Side. With a desire to skip going into his family's baking/flour business, he began a religious search that led him to the Catholic Church and, later, to join the Redemptorist order. Seeking to preach to his fellow Americans, he, and four other American converts in the Redemptorist order, were permitted to form a new congregation, the Paulist Fathers. Our founding parish, St. Paul the Apostle, is on West 60th Street and Columbus Avenue in Manhattan.
Our mission is to evangelize the modern societies of America and Canada, using all available means that reach contemporary people, sensitive to ecumenical and inter-faith dimensions of sharing faith. We emphasize sharing faith, inviting seekers, dialogue with other Christians and believers of other faith traditions, and inviting Catholics to become active in the practice of their faith.
