Creating elements of Mr. Burns
Evidence 1: Expectations for production of Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play
Description: Expectations for each project (which include formative assessments of skills along with the summative assessment of productions of the plays) are set out at the beginning; these expectation sheets lay out for students the standards and expectations that will be touched upon during the multi-week activity.
Analysis: ART presents numerous productions each academic year; each production provides students opportunities to demonstrate multiple skills. The standards and expectations for students are set out at the beginning so that students understand the nature of what their assessments include; it also offers a chance to view which standards and expectations are being integrated into which activities. In this case, the sheet given to technical theatre students also spells out the work habits and behavior expectations that reach beyond the class, and are in place to develop good habits for workplaces within the industry.
Evidence 2: Rubric from work on AoE Cluster meeting for Arts and Communication/Visual Arts, agenda here
Description: Over the past year, AoE has tasked CTE teachers around the state with finalizing new proficiencies for approval and adoption in the coming year. In Vermont, three career centers include theatre as offerings: PAHCC in Middlebury, Windham Regional in Brattleboro, and Southwest Tech in Bennington; at the November 2020 meeting, I worked with the teachers from the other two centers to tailor the broad core standards to the needs of theatre education.
Analysis: The standards for teaching theatre as CTE are in the process of being re-examined and retooled for relevance in today's environment, the first time this refinement has taken place in years. As one of three teachers from across the state who has been tasked with this update, I find that the standards are very much a part of my approach to the creation of instructional activities and assessment.
