Evidence: MSDS Lesson Plan
Description: Lesson plan for introducing students to the purpose of and information relayed by Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
Analysis: A variety of chemicals and materials used in our scene shop and classroom are considered hazardous and therefore require that we keep on hand the relevant MSDS. Students are typically unaware of the requirements set by OSHA (Standard 1910.1200) regarding MSDS when hazardous chemicals are in the workplace. This introduction is intended to familiarize students with the law regarding MSDS, their use and display, and what materials we use that are governed by the standard.
After this, students inventory the chemical products in the various workspaces of ART; they are then assigned a number of products for which they must find the MSDS online. Two binders are then created (one for the shop, one for the classroom) and the sheets are put inside. By the end of the activity, students have an understanding of the function of the form, know where to find them, and are more aware of the chemicals used in ART.
