Mission Statement: To teach the next generation of clinicians the impact of point of care ultrasound in quality image acquisition, interpretation and improvement in patient care.
Course Objectives:
To identify the fourth-year medical students who show exceptional professional interest and aptitude in learning and teaching ultrasound.
To provide these students with an opportunity for pre-residency advanced training and academic enrichment in ultrasound techniques.
To master basic ultrasound techniques and be able to perform basic level focused ultrasound procedures.
To be able to teach others how to utilize ultrasound and explain techniques such as I AIM, probe motion and an approach to the knobology of the machine.
Goal: Selected students for this program will learn and master basic ultrasound procedures including, but not limited to, cardiac ultrasound in the arrest situation, the FAST exam for trauma, screening for AAA, and other focused ultrasound exams depending on specialty of interest. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the major issues related to ultrasound and further develop their psychomotor skills in obtaining ultrasound images on models, simulators and patients. Students will participate in helping teach selected medical students throughout the medical student curriculum.
Evaluation of competency: A combination of both written and practical tests demonstrating competency in all areas.
Upon completion of the program, students will earn a grade on their Dean's Letter.
