Number Words and Numerals

Number Words and Numerals (NWN) is the strand that develops the students’ skill in counting forwards and backwards, being able to state the number word that comes before or after a given number and identifying the name of the symbols associated with numbers. These skills are the foundations that allow students to make cognitive shifts in mathematical thinking.

Forward Number Word Sequence (FNWS) is facility with the verbal sequence of numbers. This skill is demonstrated by having students count orally in sequence from any number in the range of 1-100 and be able to name the next subsequent number for any given number in the same range. Developing FNWS helps to support a students’ ability to solve additive tasks.

Backward Number Word Sequence (BNWS) is facility with the verbal sequence of numbers. This skill is demonstrated by having students count backwards orally in sequence from any number in the range of 1-100 and be able to name the previous number for any given number in the same range. Developing BNWS helps to support a students’ ability to solve subtractive tasks.

Numeral Identification is the skill in which students can identify numerals in isolation.
