Leveled Reading

"The single best predictor of reading success is VOLUME of reading."

—Kylene Beers Ed.D. (Teacher/Reading Educator/Lecturer)

Leveled Reading

In reading workshop, students should be reading (and finishing!) books on or near their assessed independent reading level for class work and homework. Think of their book choices like a band. For example, a student reading at an independent Level P should feel free to choose books from Levels O, P, Q, and R. Every student is aware their level, which is designated by a letter. They can "shop" for a book anytime in our leveled classroom library. Books of choice that are well above their assessed reading level should be encouraged and explored during extra reading time. (We have nicknamed these, "dessert books!")

To check if books feel "Just Right," please encourage your children to use the "Five Finger Rule" when the level is unknown.
