What is aquaponics?
Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines aquaculture (raising aquatic animals such as fish in tanks) with hydroponics (cultivating plants in water). The nutrient-rich aquaculture water is fed to hydroponically grown plants, increasing plant growth and naturally filtering the water.
The Ecological Engineering Student society currently manages a larger aquaponics system in our greenhouse as well as a small, portable, tabletop aquaponics system. The systems are used to grow a variety of plants sold at EESS plant sales, as well as providing an opportunity for club members to get hands-on experience designing and maintaining aquaponics systems.
