About Mr. Kathrein
Biography
I grew up in Olmsted Falls and Graduated from Olmsted Falls High School. Growing up, my parents had a small boat and cottage on Sandusky Bay. I would go fishing and boating in the summers. I started SCUBA diving because I wanted to swim with sharks in the wild. Once I started swimming with fish, I decided I liked being in the water with them more than I liked hooking them, and I stopped fishing. I got into conservation to protect sharks from being finned and started learning a lot more about what is happening on our planet and what I can do to help. I became vegan to help the environment.
Education
Kent State
Cleveland State
I went to Kent State University for my Bachelor's degree in Education and Cleveland State for my Masters Degree.
I was recruited by Kent State to play basketball, but in the end, did not end up playing for them. I was fortunate that Kent was 1 of 3 schools in Ohio to offer degrees in Industrial Arts (Technology Education) and ended up graduating from Kent in 1998.
Teaching Career
I started teaching High School Mechanical Drawing and Tech Ed in 1998 at Kirtland High School. I didn't like being on the east side and away from friends and family so I moved back to the west side of Cleveland. I left Kirtland H.S. in 2000 to teach woodworking at Learwood Middle School from 2000 to 2002. I left Avon Lake and came to OFMS in 2002. I wasn't sure about leaving Avon Lake, they are a good school system and I was unsure about returning to where I grew up. It took a few years to adjust, but I am happy I returned to Olmsted Falls.
Family
Both my dogs are named after Tiger sharks that are regulars at Tiger Beach, Bahamas. My dogs are both Pit Bulls, and like sharks, Pit Bulls are often misunderstood by most people who only believe what they hear on TV and never experience the reality of these animals. My dogs are the most friendly and affectionate dogs I've ever seen.
Emma
Emma is mostly Pit Bull and American Bulldog. She is named after the most filmed, photographed, and famous shark on the planet. Emma (the Tiger Shark) is a 15-foot Tiger Shark who lives at Tiger Beach, where she swims with divers on a daily basis. Emma (the Tiger Shark) is also considered by many to be the friendliest wild Tiger Shark on the planet.
Elsa
Elsa is 100% American Pit Bull Terrier. Her big ears crack me up. She is named after the biggest and prettiest Tiger Shark I swam with at Tiger Beach. I thought Emma was a big Tiger Shark until I met Elsa. 🤣
