Fiction is organized alphabetically by the author's last name
Graphic Novels are on the shelf in front of Seminar Rooms 2 and 3.
All the non-fiction books in the Library are shelved using the Dewey Decimal System. We use this system to group all books on a certain subject together, which makes your research easier. Every topic is given a number from 0 - 999. Here are the main categories of subjects:
000 - Computer Science, information & general works
100 - Philosophy & Psychology
200 - Religion
300 - Social Sciences
400 - Language
500 - Science (including math)
600 - Technology
700 - Arts and Recreation
800 - Literature
900 - History, Geography & Biography
The more precise the subject, the more precise the number gets. For example, all books on Science can be found in the 500s. If you were specifically looking for Science books on Chemistry, you'd look for books in the 540s.
Using either a desktop, Chromebook or your mobile device, go to Canterbury's Library Search page at
The Search field works just like Google. You can search specifically for an author, book title, a series or a subject by clicking the appropriate icon after entering your search word. You have the option of creating an account through the Library Search Page. This is recommended if you are working on a research project and want to remember the books you have used.
The screenshot below shows an example search results page. It is important to note whether the resource is IN or OUT. If the resource is IN, write down its Call Number. The Call Number will tell you where to find the book in the library. You can make a list of the books that interest you by adding it to the temp list icon (found in the upper right hand corner of the screen).
When you have found the Call Numbers of the books you need, follow the signs in the Library to the appropriate Section! You can also ask the Librarian for help!
