Building
The Following will be introductions to different types of projects that could be completed during this semester. Please refer to the one that we are doing this year.
Building a Shed
You now understand what is required in order to properly build a shed, garage or even a house. In order to put theory into practice we will now build a shed.
The city bylaws specify that any structure that exeeds 10 square meters (107.6 sq/ft) requires the purchase of a building permit. Doing so requires a building to be secured to the ground i.e. slab, sona tubes..... It also restrict the location at which the new owner wants to have the shed installed. For this reason, the sheds that we will be building will be less then 108 sq/ft.
The OCDSB is pretty strict when it comes to safety. Students are not allowed to build structure that requires them to climb on, i.e. roof, without having to wear various safety equipment. Also, building a complete structure demands the use of a special truck and the purchase of a daily license for delivery. It also restricts the location at which the shed can be delivered. In order to overcome these challenges, the shed has to be built in panels that can easily be carried between two houses and assembled in the backyard by the owner.
Most people have the skills to assemble pretty much anything. All they need is a good owners manual with a step by step assembly plan. This means you have to think of the construction / assembly process throughout your entire design in order to ensure an easy, strong and beautiful finish. The package should be put together using various Inventor/AutoCAD drawings in a way that truly represents each step to be taken for complete assembly.
Here are requirements for the shed;
The floor will be build out of pressure treated 2X4 and will be 16 inch center
¾ inch plywood will be covering the floor
The walls will be built out of 2X4 and will be 24 inch center
Our roof rafters will also be built out of 2X4 and centered every 24 inches
5/8 tongue and groove chipboard will be used to cover the rafters
The walls will be covered outside only with 7/16 chipboard
Siding matching the color of the house will be included in the package (enough to cover the shed, includes corners)
20 years roof shingle will be included in the package
All the fascia, soffit and flashing to be purchased by owner
Building a Camp
Now that you understand the difference between a camp and a cottage, you are now ready
