ESS 2.3 Local Geological Feature

91189: Investigate geological processes in a New Zealand locality

In this standard, you will be required to describe two local Dunedin rock types and link them to the rock cycle and tectonic processes which formed them. You may use some or all of the resources below, and you are encouraged to find additional resources to help write your report.

The report must be completed on the Google Document which your teacher has shared with you.

For each rock, create a report that:

• identifies the type of rock and where it is found in Dunedin

• explains how plate tectonics have formed this type of rock

• explains how rock-cycle processes have formed this type of rock

• link the plate tectonic and rock cycle processes that have formed this type of rock

• explain how weathering and erosion have shaped landforms (in Dunedin) that are made of this type of rock over time.

You will need to write between 500 and 1000 words.

The Three Main Types of Rock

Rock Layers under Dunedin

This graphic shows the sequence of rocks found in the Dunedin area, starting from the oldest at the bottom to the youngest at the top.

Dunedin is not near a plate boundary, so how did a volcano form here?
