SETTING UP WIFI

In order to access New York Tech's wifi while on campus:

• Follow the instructions on this wireless support page: https://www.nyit.edu/its/connect_wireless 

• For those having issues connecting: 

  • Seek assistance at the help desk in the Academic Computing Lab on 2nd floor of Harry Schure Hall ,  OR

  • Contact Service Central at 516.686.1400/Option 7 or email servicecentral@nyit.edu.

Students are eligible for discounts offered by Apple and Dell for personal use.  For any issues with this discount, please contact Service Central at 516-686-1400.

SPECIFICATIONS

The specs below are focused partly on the ability to use the test-taking software Examplify.  Examplify will be used for almost all quizzes and exams.  Additionally, in the 3rd year, devices must also be PAEA End-of-Rotation Exam compatible.

WEBCAM

All devices must have a working camera and microphone.  If not, please purchase a plugin USB camera with mic.

LAPTOP SPECIFICATIONS

• At the very minimum, make sure your laptops meet the minimum specifications listed here: https://examsoft.com/resources/examplify-minimum-system-requirements/

• The website also lists acceptable operating system, whether you choose to buy an Apple product or a Windows computer

• Do not buy Chromebooks, or Linux-based laptops

• Install the free Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus, available for all enrolled students.  More below about this below under "Required Software).

TABLET SPECIFICATIONS

For the first two years only, you may use a tablet instead of a laptop, if you feel comfortable with reading lectures and typing up papers on a smaller screen. In the Clinical Year, a laptop is required as certain exams cannot be taken on tablets.  

Tablets must comply with the following:

• The only acceptable tablets are Microsoft Surface Pro* and Apple iPads.  

  • iPads must meet the following specs:

      • Purchase and install an app that will allow you to read and write Microsoft Office documents (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)

      • Purchase and install an app that will allow you to open a PDF document

  • Surface Pros* must meet the following specs:

    • • Surface Pro* tablets may work for clinical year PAEA end-of-rotation exams, but based on information from PAEA's IT department, it's best to also have a keyboard with a trackpad or a mouse.

  • Install the free Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus, available for all enrolled students.  More about this below under "Required Software".

*STATEMENT FROM PAEA ABOUT SURFACE PRODUCTS:

A PAEA representative provided the following statement regarding Microsoft Surface products and their compatibility with clinical year End-of-Rotation exams: 

"Laptops, Pros, and Books should be fine. We can't really guarantee that any systems will work without the use of a mouse or trackpad. It's pretty easy to erroneously change your answer using touch screen.  Also, some don't allow popups, because the active app takes over the whole screen... That being said, we suggest you go to examdriver.com/compatibility before scheduling exams to test your system"   

The representative also said  "There might be concerns about (Surface) Go"

REQUIRED SOFTWARE

Examplify

This is the exam-taking platform that you will be using for all your exams and quizzes.   In late August, watch out for an email from Examsoft regarding how to log in (including the Institution ID).   You will also receive an email from a faculty member, with instructions regarding a practice exam.

There will be a quick mock exam/training session on Orientation Day. Please be prepared by watching the above videos and doing the practice exam several times.  The Medical Terminology exam will be done on your laptop, using this software.

• Install the Examplify software on your laptop.  If you have an iPad, please also install "Examplify for iPad" through the App Store.

Zoom

Students are require to have the Zoom app installed on two devices: 

• On your primary device such as laptop or tablet (for remote lectures)

• On a secondary device such as your phone or tablet (as a means for our faculty to proctor remote exams)

Microsoft Office Suite

• This suite is required for reading, writing and submitting your class work.

  • If you do not already have MS Office on your computer, you should be able to get it for free after the first day of class.  

  • This is the information posted by our IT department: 

    • Active full-time and part-time NYIT students, staff, faculty may now download Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus for free. Community members can download up to five free copies for PC or Mac devices.

    •  Microsoft Office 365 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Publisher, and Access. 

  • To download Microsoft Office products: 

• • 1. Reset your My NYIT password 

    2. Once your password has been reset, go to Software for Faculty & Staff (requires My NYIT login). 

    3. Review instructions for the platform you are using: PC, Mac, or iOS. 

    4. Click the link to access available software
