School-Wide PBIS is not a program that schools implement, rather it is a framework which schools can use to restructure their existing discipline systems and practices. Building a school-wide discipline system using basic PBIS practices does take time and effort, and schools should not expect to be able to accomplish this with a few short Professional Development sessions or an all staff training with a PBIS expert. Northwest AEA is committed to supporting schools through the initial implementation of School-Wide PBIS across the continuum of supports (Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III) for a period of three years and then will continue to be available as needed to support schools in sustaining their efforts over time.
If your school or district is interested in PBIS there are several steps necessary to get started.
- All staff should be introduced to PBIS by viewing an overview video or having one of the Northwest AEA PBIS Training Team members provide and overview presentation for the staff.
- Following this introduction, all building staff (teaching and support staff) complete an on-line survey that provides information about the staff's perceptions about discipline practices in place and what are their perceived needs for improvement. This survey is completed using the www.pbisassessment.org website. The survey must be set up by contacting Theresa Dehn at Northwest AEA (tdehn@nwaea.org).
- Determine if your school staff is committed to embedding the PBIS framework into your discipline system and if they are committed to improving the climate and culture of the school.
- Determine what staff would become part of the School-Wide PBIS Leadership Team. This team usually includes 6-8 people that are representative of the school staff.
- Complete the School Readiness Checklist, Commitment Form, and School Profile Form and submit to Theresa Dehn at tdehn@nwaea.org
