Where do I start?
- Contact your school counselor - your counselor plays a big role in helping you get into college. Meet to talk about your college plans and review your transcript.
- Visit the College and Career Center (Office 110).
- Visit the the Registrar's Office to request your transcripts for college and scholarship applications.
- There is a notebook form to fill out (name, amount of transcripts wanted, etc.).
- For same-day processing, request transcripts in the morning, then pick-up at the end of your school day.
- Requests made at the end of the day or Fridays will be available on the following Monday.
- Complete the FAFSA
- Stay involved in extracurricular activities to improve your teamwork and leadership skills. Create and/or update your Activities Resume for use with admissions and scholarship applications.
- Finish your college visits and narrow your selection to 3-4 schools.
- Consider taking the ACT and/or SAT to improve your test score. Colleges use your top score when awarding college-based scholarships. Make sure your scores are sent to each of your colleges. Fee waivers are available for these tests. Speak with your counselor to see if you qualify.
- Apply for admission to your top 3-4 colleges - be sure to apply before the college's deadline.
- Apply for scholarships; Check the Scholarship tab for available opportunities. Also conduct your own research to identify additional scholarships.
- Ask your College counselor about other local awards.
- Apply for college-based scholarships.
- Visit free, online scholarship sites to apply for national scholarships.
What do I need to know
about scholarships?
College is expensive. It is really difficult for many families to pay for college. Getting scholarships will help you bring down that cost. Even though they are not 100% free, but does that mean you have to pay the money back? NO, you do not have to pay them back anything. However, for some scholarships you are required to do something. Such as community service. Below are some things you need to know about scholarships.

- There are two types of scholarships
- Equity - Scholarships that are awarded to people who have faced some form of disadvantage that has limited the opportunities available to them
- Merit - Scholarships that are awarded to the students who get the best grades
- If you have a scholarship that has continued eligibility you need to make sure you satisfy the requirements. Other wise it will be taken away from you.
- A comprehensive scholarship covers the entire cost of attendance.
- Not all full scholarships cover the entire cost of attendance (COA). In fact, most only cover tuition fees which do not include room and board, insurance, transportation, the cost of books and other fees.
- Lastly and most important, you do NOT have to PAY to get a scholarship. If you are asked to make a payment, then it is likely that the scholarship is a SCAM. BEWARE.​
